What is Ketamine Care?

The Science

Psychedelics as Catalysts

Ketamine Care at Mana Health is part of a broader, holistic approach to Psychedelic Care, emphasizing a safe, nurturing setting combined with integrated body-breath-mind techniques, allowing patients to process emotions, uncover new perspectives, and experience breakthroughs that enhance well-being. This emphasis on holistic care is designed to maximize therapeutic outcomes and aid lasting transformation.

Ketamine is an extremely safe dissociative anaesthetic that is listed as a World Health Organisation essential medicine. Ketamine is being increasingly used as a therapeutic tool for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain. When administered in a carefully monitored, supportive environment, ketamine can produce altered states of consciousness, helping patients liberate themselves from entrenched patterns of thought and behaviour.

The neurophysiological effects of ketamine and other psychedelics are particularly remarkable due to their influence on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neuroplasticity, both of which are correlated with mental health and emotional resilience. BDNF is a protein that promotes the survival, growth, and differentiation of neurons in the brain, playing a pivotal role in neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Elevated levels of BDNF are associated with improved mood, cognitive flexibility, and the brain's ability to adapt, making it a critical factor in overcoming conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain.

Ketamine and other psychedelics act as a catalyst for neuroplastic changes, allowing the brain to "rewire" itself. Ketamine rapidly increases BDNF levels, especially in regions linked to mood regulation, such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. This biochemical shift supports the formation of new synaptic connections, enabling patients to move past deeply ingrained thought patterns, often related to trauma or depression.

Psychedelics, as catalysts rather than traditional replacement therapies, offer a unique mechanism of action. Unlike antidepressants, which can potentially mask symptoms by artificially stabilising neurochemicals, psychedelics trigger deep, sometimes challenging introspective experiences that allow for profound healing. Psychedelics enable insights and awareness to arise organically, with BDNF and neuroplasticity supporting this by creating the neural environment necessary for these insights to have lasting impact.

Through these biochemical and experiential shifts, patients at Mana Health gain not just relief but a transformation—a new neural and psychological foundation that can enhance long-term well-being. Psychedelics in this context are not crutches but tools that empower individuals to achieve self-liberation and deep mental health. By catalysing these experiences through Ketamine Care, Mana Health blends cutting-edge neuroscience with ancient wisdom to support profound healing.

After an Initial Health Consultation (IHC) with one of our doctors to understand your health needs and suitability for psychedelic care, you may be eligible for enrolment in one of our Ketamine Care programs.
